Michael Vaughan Urges Jacob Bethell to Exit IPL 2026 for England Duty

The Call for Home

In a significant development concerning England’s upcoming cricket schedule, former captain Michael Vaughan has publicly urged Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) batter Jacob Bethell to prioritize his international commitments over the remainder of the IPL 2026 playoffs. Vaughan’s advice stems from concerns regarding a finger injury that forced the young left-hander to miss RCB’s recent clash against Sunrisers Hyderabad.

With England’s crucial Test series against New Zealand scheduled to commence on June 4 at the historic Lord’s Cricket Ground, Vaughan believes there is little merit in Bethell remaining in India if he is not fully fit to contribute to his franchise. The former skipper emphasized that the England team management needs to conduct a comprehensive assessment of the injury to determine the player’s readiness for the Lord’s Test.

The Strategic Imperative

Vaughan’s argument is rooted in the necessity of preparation. Speaking to Cricbuzz, he noted, “If Jacob Bethell is injured, he should be on the next plane home to England. England plays a Test match on June 4th, making sure that England has a look at him before potentially seeing if he is fit or not going to be fit for the Test match against New Zealand. I would think he’s better off back in the UK, just getting assessed.”

The stakes are high for England, as Bethell is currently slated to bat at the pivotal No. 3 position. Should he be ruled out, the selectors would be forced to look toward alternatives such as James Rew or the experienced Joe Root to anchor the innings. Given the importance of the No. 3 spot in Test cricket, ensuring the primary candidate is fully healthy is paramount.

Balancing League Growth and National Duty

While Michael Vaughan has been a vocal supporter of the Indian Premier League as a developmental tool for young cricketers, he maintains that national duty must take precedence when a player is hampered by injury. He acknowledges the value of the IPL experience—noting that the intensity and the environment of the dressing room contribute massively to a player’s growth—but he draws a firm line when it comes to injury management.

“I’m being a bit old school, I guess they’ll say he’s got to stay till the end, but if he’s not going to play for Royal Challengers Bengaluru, England have got a training camp this next week. He should be back home in the UK,” Vaughan explained. The training camp, which coincides with the arrival of head coach Brendon McCullum, is seen as an essential phase for the team’s preparation.

Bethell’s Struggles in IPL 2026

The conversation around Bethell’s departure is further complicated by his current form. Despite RCB finishing at the top of the points table this season, Bethell has struggled to find his rhythm. In seven appearances throughout the 2026 campaign, the left-hander has managed only 96 runs, averaging a modest 13.71 with a strike rate of 124.67. His highest individual score remains a mere 27, having crossed the 20-run mark only twice.

Bethell’s limited playing time has largely been a byproduct of his team’s injury rotations, specifically concerning Phil Salt. Now that Salt has returned to full fitness and is expected to reclaim his spot in the Playing XI for the playoffs, Bethell’s role in the squad has diminished further.

Looking Ahead

Vaughan concluded that since Bethell has already gleaned the necessary experience from his time in India, the focus must shift entirely to the England setup. “As a young player, he was here last year, so he learned a lot. This year, he’s played a little bit, but hasn’t had a huge amount of success. But if he is injured, England has a training camp this week… He should be back in the UK with the team,” he reiterated.

As the RCB team management prepares for the high-pressure environment of the IPL playoffs, the decision regarding Bethell will likely be handled with caution. However, for a young player whose primary future lies in the Test arena, the consensus among experts is clear: the path to Lord’s begins in the training nets back in England, not on the bench in India.
