R Ashwin pinpoints biggest reason behind Mumbai Indians IPL 2026 horror show, and its not just one isolated factor its a perfect storm of injuries, underperformance, and leadership strain that derailed a once-dominant franchise.

Jasprit Bumrahs Unthinkable Slide

Former India offspinner Ravichandran Ashwin didnt mince words when dissecting the Mumbai Indians disastrous IPL 2026 campaign. The most startling revelation? Jasprit Bumrahs catastrophic form.

In 13 matches, Bumrah, widely regarded as one of the finest T20 bowlers in the world, managed just 4 wickets at a staggering average of 102.50. As Ashwin pointed out, this marks the first time in IPL history that a bowler has averaged over 100 while playing a full season.

This is the first time in the history of IPL that a bowler has averaged over 100 after playing the full season, and thats Jasprit Bumrah. I dont think anybody would have believed me if I had said this before the season, Ashwin stated on his YouTube channel.

Injuries Plague the Squad

Injury woes further compounded MIs struggles. Captain Hardik Pandya missed two crucial games due to a back spasm, while Rohit Sharma was sidelined mid-season with both toe and hamstring issues. Even more concerning, Bumrah himself was revealed to be playing through injury.

Adding to the depth crisis, all-rounder Mitchell Santner and wicketkeeper Quinton de Kock were ruled out for the entire season, leaving MIs lineup thin and inconsistent.

Trent Boults Expensive Exit?

Another underperformer was Trent Boult, brought in for INR 12.50 crores in 2025. The Kiwi left-armer managed only 2 wickets in five outings, at an average of 94 and an economy rate exceeding 11 runs per over. He was eventually dropped from the playing XI.

Ashwin believes Boults release is imminent, despite MIs One Family ethos. I think they will release Trent Boult to free up their purse. That I am very sure of, he said, highlighting the difficult decisions ahead.

Hardik Pandyas Leadership and Form in Doubt

Hardik Pandyas personal performance was far from inspiring. With the bat, he scored 206 runs in 10 innings at an average of 22.89 and a strike rate of 138. With the ball, he claimed just 4 wickets at nearly 65 apiece and an economy close to 11.5.

Ashwin suggested that fatigue or injury might be behind Pandyas dip, particularly noting his struggle against hard-length deliveries a departure from his spin-hitting prowess during his Gujarat Titans days.

Hardik used to bat at No. 4 and No. 5 for Gujarat Titans. He used to take down the spinners. But this time, it looks like he has a small problem with the hard length ball. I dont know why. It could be fatigue or injury, Ashwin observed.

What Lies Ahead for MI in IPL 2027?

Looking forward, Ashwin offered a sobering prediction. While he acknowledged the star quality in MIs squad, he wasnt optimistic about an immediate turnaround.

This Mumbai Indians team seemed a bit strange. It cannot be easy. With the quality they have, maybe they can play well next year. But I wont be surprised if they also find it hard for one more year. It looks like a lot of people are not at their best, he said.

The 2026 season saw MI win just 4 of 14 games, narrowly avoiding last place on net run rate over Lucknow Super Giants. Their last-ball elimination by RCB in Raipur sealed their fate the third time in five seasons theyve missed the playoffs.

Once a five-time champion in eight seasons (20132020), Mumbai Indians have now gone six consecutive seasons without an IPL title.

Time for a Reset?

The data is clear: Bumrahs unprecedented slump, key injuries, and leadership fatigue under Pandya were central to MIs collapse. While their season started with a symbolic win their first opener victory in 14 years it quickly unravelled into a four-match losing streak.

A brief resurgence with a win over Gujarat Titans was swallowed by another three-game slide. From there, momentum never returned.

As IPL 2027 approaches, Mumbai Indians face tough questions: Do they rebuild? Do they trust their core? Or do they finally break from tradition to survive?

For now, all eyes are on how the franchise responds because as R Ashwin made clear, R Ashwin pinpoints biggest reason behind Mumbai Indians IPL 2026 horror show as a systemic collapse, not just bad luck.
