CSK Eyes WPL Entry as Women’s Cricket Gains Momentum
Chennai Super Kings may be navigating uncertain waters in the upcoming IPL 2026 season, but their long-term vision remains bold. With the Women’s Premier League (WPL) rapidly evolving into cricket’s next big frontier, CSK is making it clear: they want a seat at the table.
CSK Leadership Signals WPL Ambitions
In a recent interview with RevSportz, CSK CEO Kasi Viswanathan opened up about the franchise’s interest in joining the WPL. While no formal plans are in motion yet, the sentiment from the top is unmistakable.
“Our owner, Rupa Gurunath, is a great follower of cricket. She would definitely like, at some stage, when an opportunity arises and if we are able to compete and get into the Women’s Premier League, for us to be involved,” Viswanathan stated.
He emphasized that while enthusiasm is high, there’s no immediate timeline. “But I cannot say exactly when it will happen. That is a call we will have to take,” he added, underscoring the need for internal alignment and a viable opportunity.
WPL’s Rapid Rise Fuels Franchise Interest
Since its debut in 2023, the WPL has transformed the landscape of women’s cricket in India. With franchises like Mumbai Indians, Royal Challengers Bangalore, Delhi Capitals, UP Warriorz, and Gujarat Giants already in the mix, the league has delivered thrilling cricket and record-breaking viewership.
Its success has not gone unnoticed. As more IPL franchises assess the future of women’s cricket, expansion appears increasingly likely — though not imminent.
Punjab Kings Also In the Running
CSK isn’t alone in their aspirations. Punjab Kings co-owner Mohit Burman confirmed the franchise’s interest in acquiring a WPL team.
“The WPL has already established itself as an important platform for the women’s game in a very short period of time,” Burman told PTI. “The growth of women’s cricket has been fantastic to witness. Personally, I think the future of the women’s game is extremely bright. We would love to own a women’s IPL team.”
He clarified that Punjab Kings’ absence in the initial phase wasn’t due to a lack of support, but rather a matter of timing and strategic business planning.
“Not investing initially should not be interpreted as a lack of belief in women’s cricket,” Burman explained.
BCCI Takes Cautious Approach to Expansion
Despite growing franchise interest, the BCCI remains cautious. Officials are prioritizing the stability and strength of the current five-team structure before considering expansion.
Key challenges include:
- A congested international calendar, limiting available playing windows
- Player availability and workload management
- Ensuring competitive balance with new entrants
Any move to expand the WPL to six or eight teams will depend on the BCCI securing a more sustainable time slot and ensuring long-term viability.
What’s Next for CSK and Women’s Cricket?
While CSK fans await clarity on their IPL status, the franchise is quietly positioning itself for the next big leap. With leadership passionate about the women’s game and rivals signaling intent, the pressure to act may grow.
For now, CSK’s WPL dream remains on hold — but very much alive. As women’s cricket continues its upward trajectory, the day Chennai Super Kings march into the WPL might be closer than we think.
The message is clear: the future of cricket is inclusive, ambitious, and driven by franchises ready to lead the charge — on and off the field.
