A Testament to Resilience: Yastika Bhatia’s Triumphant Return

Rehabilitating after significant knee surgery often feels like being forced to learn your craft from scratch. For Indian batter Yastika Bhatia, the road back to the international arena was paved with uncertainty, physical pain, and long months of grueling rehabilitation. Yet, when she stepped onto the pitch at Chelmsford for the recent T20I against England, she played as if she had never been away, scoring her maiden T20I fifty and guiding India to a commanding victory.

Overcoming the Odds

There was no visible rust on Yastika, despite this being her first international appearance since October 2024 and her first T20I outing in over two years. Her performance was a culmination of the hard work she put in during practice, a sentiment echoed by her batting partner, Jemimah Rodrigues, who urged her to stay focused on building a partnership from the moment they met at the crease.

The situation was far from ideal for India. Having lost openers Smriti Mandhana and Shafali Verma to Lauren Bell’s opening-over double-strike, the team found themselves in a precarious position at 7 for 2. To make matters more challenging, captain Harmanpreet Kaur was rested for the opening match of the three-game series—a vital set of games before the upcoming T20 World Cup. Yastika and Rodrigues responded with a brilliant 126-run stand from just 76 balls, effectively shifting the momentum.

The Long Road to Recovery

Reflecting on her journey, Yastika admitted that the path back was far from easy. After undergoing ACL surgery last October, she missed the 50-over World Cup and the WPL. A subsequent wrist injury during the WBBL added another hurdle to her comeback story. Describing the process, she shared, “Those who undergo ACL surgery know that the whole muscle of that leg goes away. We have to build everything from scratch. There were days where nothing was happening, no progress was seen. But because of the support from Jemi, the staff, and the team management, I just kept showing up.”

Nandani Sharma’s Impressive Debut

While Yastika’s batting stole the spotlight, the match also marked the successful international debut of fast bowler Nandani Sharma. Demonstrating why she was a standout in the WPL, the 24-year-old claimed 3 for 34, including two wickets in consecutive balls. She proved lethal against Amy Jones—who fought hard for an England-best 67—and Dani Gibson, before cleaning up Issy Wong with a precise slower ball.

Yastika praised the newcomer’s composure: “Nandani bowled beautifully. She used her slower ones—her greatest strength—to perfection. Seeing her emotion when she received her cap was special for all of us. It is an exciting time for Indian cricket when whoever enters the XI makes such a significant impact.”

Looking Ahead to the World Cup

Despite England’s efforts to contain the scoring late in the innings, India’s performance highlighted the immense depth of their squad. With Harmanpreet Kaur expected to return for the second match in Bristol, the team is building momentum at exactly the right time. England, meanwhile, will look to regroup as they experiment with their middle order in the absence of Nat Sciver-Brunt. As both sides prepare for the T20 World Cup, performances like those from Yastika and Nandani indicate that India’s preparation is firmly on track, proving that when the pressure is at its peak, the team has the talent and the grit to deliver results.
