Atkinson’s Return to Surrey

Gus Atkinson took two wickets on his return to Surrey after being left out of the England squad for the second Test, removing Kiran Carlson and Ben Kellaway while conceding just eight runs in as many overs in his morning spell.

Atkinson was not considered for selection at The Oval after he and captain Ben Stokes broke England’s curfew while celebrating their 115-run win in the first Test against New Zealand at Lord’s, but could yet come back into contention at Trent Bridge next week.

Glamorgan’s Fightback

From 39 for 4, Glamorgan fought back to 244 for 6 with Cooke ending 101 not out to complete a first century since September 2024, supported by Mason Crane (59 not out) in an unbeaten 165-run partnership.

One of five changes from their draw with Hampshire, Sean Abbott removed both openers in Surrey’s dominant morning ahead of things worsening for Glamorgan by having Colin Ingram retiring hurt, struck on the hand by Atkinson – adding to Carlson and Asa Tribe taking earlier blows before being removed.

Cooke and Crane’s Partnership

The 40-year-old Glamorgan keeper enjoyed a counter-attacking period when Chahar struggled to find consistency or life out of the day one pitch and Surrey needed to fill overs with Dan Lawrence and Adam Thomas’ gentle medium pace option.

Cooke found the boundary regularly to help him to 50 from 56 balls, having already bettered his first-class season best of 39.

Crane, who has provided healthy contributions in times of need this season, played a supporting role as the pitch offered less and less as the day continued.

Conclusion

After a late tea, Cooke was forced to be more measured, still able to bring up his first century for nearly two years, pulling Chahar away to follow his teammate to a milestone in the game.

By the time light had withered Glamorgan left the field with momentum their way but the innings still in the balance sitting six runs short of their first bonus point.
