A hallmark of Georgia Voll’s still-fledgling international career has been the seamless way in which she has stepped into the void left by the legendary Alyssa Healy. Transitioning into the shoes of such a colossal figure in Australian cricket is no small feat, yet Voll has managed to make the process look almost effortless. When a knee injury ruled Healy out of Australia’s home ODI series with India in late 2024, the stage was set for a new talent to emerge, and Voll did not disappoint, scoring an unbeaten 46 on debut followed by a century in her second international match.
Adapting to the International Stage
While there were periods of waiting between her initial breakthrough and Healy’s eventual retirement in March this year, Australia had already identified a ready-made prototype opener in Voll. By the time Healy called it a day, Voll had already accumulated 21 international caps, preparing her for the moment she would be called upon to lead the charge. Reflecting on her growth, Voll credits the unwavering support from the coaching staff and the senior playing group.
“Just being backed right from the start, knowing my role within this team,” Voll explained. “I was in a little bit, out a little bit with Midge still going about her business and just being able to learn off her and the other senior players in the group, being able to train in different conditions even though I wasn’t playing, just getting ready for that opportunity. That’s probably helped me go out there when I get that opportunity and back myself.”
A Licence to Thrill
Voll’s tactical approach has been a breath of fresh air. During a recent match against Pakistan at Headingley, she shared an assured century partnership with Ellyse Perry. Voll’s quick-fire 39 off 28 balls was instrumental in getting Australia’s innings back on track after an early setback. Her philosophy is simple: put the bowlers under pressure from the very first ball.
“That’s my role at the top, to put pressure back on the bowlers and try and get our team off to a really good start,” she stated. “With the depth of our team, I get that licence to go out there and see the ball and hit the ball, and that’s probably my role up the top.” Despite stylistic similarities to Healy, Voll is focused on crafting her own unique brand of aggression while ensuring the team is always in a commanding position.
Versatility Under Pressure
Voll’s impact extends beyond her batting. Recently, she was called upon to take the wicketkeeping gloves in Southampton when Beth Mooney suffered back soreness and standard back-up Phoebe Litchfield was unavailable due to injury. Her adaptability has impressed her teammates, most notably Ellyse Perry, who scored 71 off 48 in a dominant 113-run victory over Pakistan.
“Most definitely seamlessly is the word,” Perry remarked regarding Voll’s integration into the side. “She looks so comfortable at this level. She’s such a powerful player, particularly down the ground, but then off the back foot as well if you drop too short, so it’s really hard from a length perspective in the powerplay to bowl to her. Her disposition as well, she’s got a level of confidence and belief in her ability, which is completely warranted and the fact that she’s just so calm and stable at the crease all the time. It’s been such an easy transition for her into the side.”

As Voll continues to climb the T20I batting rankings, her calm temperament and technical prowess under pressure suggest she is just getting started. Whether she is opening the batting or taking on unexpected roles behind the stumps, her contribution to the Australian setup has been vital.
