Squad Changes Ahead of Decisive Clashes
As the intense five-match ODI series against New Zealand reaches its climax, the West Indies management has confirmed significant personnel changes to the roster. It has been officially announced that Greaves and King return for final two ODIs against New Zealand, providing a timely boost to the batting and all-round options available to captain Shai Hope.
Addressing Injury Concerns
The decision to bring back allrounder Justin Greaves and top-order specialist Brandon King comes in the wake of unfortunate injuries to Roston Chase and John Campbell. Both players have been ruled out for the remainder of the series, forcing the selectors to adjust their plans for the final two encounters at the Kensington Oval.
Roston Chase is currently sidelined as he continues his recovery process. He sustained a laceration and contusion to his right index finger during the second Test match against Sri Lanka earlier in July. The management is prioritising his long-term health, ensuring he receives the necessary time to recover completely.
Similarly, John Campbell’s departure is a blow to the side. He sustained a left hamstring injury while batting during the third ODI of this series. The medical team has scheduled further scans to determine the severity of the tear and to assess how long the left-handed batter will be out of action.
A Look at the Returning Players
Justin Greaves’ return is particularly significant. Although he was initially named in the squad at the start of the series, a back injury prevented him from participating in the first three matches. His recovery marks a vital return to fitness for the allrounder, who offers balance to the playing eleven. Meanwhile, Brandon King, a reliable force in the top order, is expected to bring stability to the batting lineup as the team looks to level the series.
The squad dynamics have also been influenced by other availability factors. Shimron Hetmyer, who had initially secured an NOC to participate in Major League Cricket for the Seattle Orcas, was recalled to the national set-up. He has already made an appearance in the third ODI, where he contributed 26 runs, and he will continue to be a part of the plans for the final two games.
Squad Departures and Absences
Not everyone involved in the opening games will remain for the conclusion of the series. Khary Pierre, who joined the squad for the three matches held in Guyana, will return home. Pierre showcased his utility by playing in all three fixtures, claiming four wickets at an average of 32.22. Additionally, allrounder Shamar Springer remains unavailable for selection. Springer had earlier withdrawn from the squad following the tragic passing of his mother, and the entire team continues to support him during this difficult time.

The West Indies currently trail the series 1-2. After a promising start with a seven-wicket victory in the opening match, the team has faced consecutive losses, allowing New Zealand to take control. With the final two games scheduled for July 19 and 21 at the iconic Kensington Oval in Barbados, the pressure is on the hosts to adapt and execute their game plan effectively.
