A Stark Pitch Contrast at the Gnoll
The surface at Neath offered a stern test for batters on Friday, presenting a marked contrast from when this same pitch was used on Wednesday in Glamorgan’s match against Sussex. In that previous game, batters dominated as there were two hundreds and almost 600 runs scored overall. On Friday, however, conditions changed completely, making it hard to get in and stay in on the surface.

Glamorgan’s Innings: Byrom Holds Firm While Cliff Shines
Wickets fell throughout the Glamorgan innings with six batters dismissed for single-figure scores. The pick of the Yorkshire bowlers was Ben Cliff, who picked up 4 for 29 as he bowled with real pace throughout. Cliff did particularly well when he pitched the ball up and challenged the batters’ stumps, making it very hard for the Glamorgan lineup to score.
Eddie Byrom held things together for Glamorgan with a gritty performance. When Byrom eventually fell for 68, he had scored more than half of the runs his side had made, with the total sitting at 117 for 6.
Lower-Order Fighting Spirit
Things could well have fallen apart with Byrom’s dismissal, but it brought together Timm van der Gugten and Alex Horton. The duo put on 47 for the seventh wicket, which proved to be the joint-highest stand of the entire match. Later in the innings, some edged boundaries from Romano Franco took Glamorgan to 187 all out in 47 overs.
Yorkshire’s Chase: Van der Gugten Causes Early Stumble
From the start of the Yorkshire innings, Timm van der Gugten was a consistent threat for Glamorgan. Yorkshire openers Adam Lyth and Will Luxton got the visitors off to a decent start, reaching 36 without loss. However, the Dutchman removed both openers to start a wobble in the Yorkshire innings that never really stopped throughout the chase.
As with the Glamorgan innings, wickets fell throughout the Yorkshire batting effort as the middle order found scoring tough on the awkward surface.
Bean and Bess Deliver Match-Winning Stand
It was not until the seventh wicket that there was a partnership that started to settle Yorkshire’s nerves. Fin Bean and Dom Bess came together when the score was on 107 for 6 and added 44 runs to turn the match back in Yorkshire’s favour. This 44-run partnership tied with Glamorgan’s seventh-wicket stand as the joint-highest of the game.
The partnership finally came to an end when Bess hammered a drive to Jamie McIlroy at mid-on off the bowling of Andy Gorvin.

The last few overs of the chase were a tense affair as both teams looked to close out a thrilling game. Pressure mounted further when Kuldeep Yadav fell trying to swing the winning runs over the leg side.
However, Fin Bean remained unflappable at the crease. Bean was there at the end as Yorkshire got over the line with nine balls and two wickets in hand, remaining 43 not out in a crucial match-winning effort.
