Virat Kohli Confirmed for Afghanistan ODIs Amid Rohit Sharma Fitness Watch

Virat Kohli’s status as a cornerstone of India’s ODI setup remains unshaken. The former captain is all but confirmed for the upcoming three-match ODI series against Afghanistan in June, following another consistent IPL season. However, the same cannot be said for Rohit Sharma, whose availability and fielding fitness are under close scrutiny by the All India Senior Men’s Selection Committee.

Selectors Meet in Guwahati for Crucial Squad Decisions

The selection committee, led by chairman Ajit Agarkar, is scheduled to meet in Guwahati to finalize squads for both the one-off Test and the three ODIs against Afghanistan. The meetings come at a pivotal time, with the IPL 2026 season wrapping up on May 31 and international action resuming almost immediately.

Kohli, who has retired from Test and T20I cricket, continues to be a dominant force in the 50-over format. His performances for Royal Challengers Bengaluru in the IPL have further cemented his place in the ODI side. But the same cannot be said for Rohit Sharma, who has endured a frustrating IPL campaign plagued by injuries.

Rohit Sharma’s Fielding Fitness Raises Concerns

Rohit suffered a toe injury during Mumbai Indians’ clash with RCB on April 12, followed by a hamstring issue that kept him off the field for weeks. As a result, he featured in just 7 of MI’s 12 matches. Even upon return, he was often used as an Impact Player, limiting his on-field presence.

Now, selectors are reportedly concerned about his ability to remain on the field for the full 50 overs—an essential requirement in ODIs. While both Kohli and Rohit are expected to feature in the series, the selectors are taking a cautious approach, prioritizing long-term fitness over immediate availability.

Jasprit Bumrah’s Return Also Under Observation

Ace pacer Jasprit Bumrah is another key player whose inclusion is being evaluated carefully. Despite his match-winning abilities, Bumrah’s injury history has prompted the board to consider rest and management. With a limited-overs tour of England scheduled shortly after the Afghanistan series, the selectors are unlikely to rush him back.

Shifting Dynamics in Wicketkeeping and Middle Order

Meanwhile, the selection panel is contemplating significant changes elsewhere. Rishabh Pant has reportedly fallen out of favor, with Sanju Samson expected to slot in as backup wicketkeeper behind first-choice KL Rahul in the ODI squad.

In the Test setup, dissatisfaction with Sai Sudharsan’s inconsistency has led to discussions about promoting Devdutt Padikkal to the No. 3 position. Jammu & Kashmir’s breakout performer Auqib Nabi is on the verge of a maiden Test call-up following his pivotal role in the team’s historic Ranji Trophy win.

Mohammed Shami, recovering and reportedly in good form, is also in line for a Test squad return. On the ODI front, pacer Prince Yadav could earn his first national call-up after strong performances in the Vijay Hazare Trophy and IPL 2026.

Series Schedule and Venues

The one-off Test against Afghanistan begins on June 6 at the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium in Mullanpur. The three ODIs will follow, starting June 14 in Dharamsala. The second match takes place in Lucknow on June 17, with the series concluding in Chennai on June 20.

With both Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma expected to feature, the series will serve as a critical gauge of India’s ODI depth and readiness ahead of major global tournaments.

What Lies Ahead for Indian Cricket?

While Shreyas Iyer was once touted to take over captaincy duties across white-ball formats, those plans appear to be on hold for now. The focus remains on stability, fitness, and seamless transitions as the post-Kohli-Rohit era begins to take shape.

As the selectors finalize their decisions, one thing is clear: performance, consistency, and availability are now non-negotiable. The Afghanistan series may not carry the weight of a World Cup, but its implications for India’s cricketing future certainly do.
