The Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have long been the gold standard for consistency in the Indian Premier League. However, the 2026 season has proven to be a stern test for the five-time champions. With the team staring at the prospect of missing the playoffs for the third consecutive year, all eyes have been on the leadership transition from the iconic MS Dhoni to Ruturaj Gaikwad. Head coach Stephen Fleming, a pillar of the CSK setup, has stepped forward to address the situation with both honesty and optimism.
Addressing the Batting Form
While Gaikwad’s leadership has been viewed as a work in progress, his personal performance with the bat has drawn scrutiny. Fleming candidly admitted that the young captain has been off the pace this season. Historically, Gaikwad has been a dominant force at the top of the order, but he has struggled to find the rhythm and strike rate required in the modern, hyper-attacking era of the IPL.
During their recent defeat to Sunrisers Hyderabad, Gaikwad’s start in the powerplay was particularly slow, managing only 9 runs from 11 deliveries. Fleming noted, “I think Ruturaj can do more. He’s done more in the past. He’s been a fine player at the top. He hasn’t produced the quantity of runs and the pace of runs that he’s done in his career. And that’s something that he will address.”
The Weight of the Captaincy Transition
Replacing a figure as influential as MS Dhoni is arguably the toughest challenge in franchise cricket. Fleming emphasized that this transition is a significant undertaking that requires patience. Despite the external pressure and the team’s lackluster results, the coach believes Gaikwad is managing the responsibility well.
“It’s a big transition from having one of the best captains in the cricket scene running the franchise for such a long time to a new captain. So it’s going to take a little bit of time,” Fleming explained. He further highlighted that Gaikwad commands “a massive amount of respect” within the dressing room, which remains a cornerstone of his captaincy as he continues to learn on the job.
The Ongoing Presence of MS Dhoni
The presence of MS Dhoni around the squad remains a talking point. Although the veteran has not played this season, his influence on the younger players and the overall continuity of the franchise has been significant. When asked about potential discussions regarding Dhoni’s future for the next season, Fleming kept his cards close to his chest, stating, “No, we’re working through this one.”
Looking Toward the Future
The 2026 season has been marred by injuries, which have undoubtedly disrupted the team’s balance. However, Fleming is keen to look at the silver linings, particularly the development of new talent who are expected to form the next generation of CSK players.
When questioned about his own future at the helm, Fleming maintained a professional and objective stance. “I’d say it’s a choice for the management. I know there’s been a lot of talk about it, but MS has been around a lot this year, which has been really important for the team… But I know we’re judged on results, that’s fair. So, yeah, it’s the management’s call, not mine.”
As the curtains draw on another testing campaign, the focus for Chennai Super Kings will shift toward rebuilding and consistency. With Gaikwad at the helm and the lessons learned from this turbulent season, the franchise will look to regain its competitive edge in the years to come.
