A Resurgent Manish Pandey Shines Under Pressure

In the high-stakes environment of the IPL 2026 season, Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) veteran Manish Pandey delivered a performance that reminded the cricketing world of his enduring quality. With KKR fighting to stay alive in the playoff race, their encounter against the Mumbai Indians at Eden Gardens became a do-or-die fixture. Amidst the tension, it was Pandey who stepped up to anchor the chase, earning accolades that compared him to one of the sport’s greatest icons: Virat Kohli.

The Knock That Kept KKR Alive

Chasing a target of 148 runs against a formidable Mumbai Indians bowling attack, KKR found themselves in a precarious position at 54/3. The pressure was mounting, and the team required a steady hand to navigate the middle overs. Manish Pandey rose to the occasion, scoring a composed 45 off 33 balls. His innings, studded with six boundaries, provided the necessary stability to bridge the gap.

Pandey shared a crucial 64-run partnership with Rovman Powell, which ultimately steered the Knight Riders to a thrilling 4-wicket victory. His ability to read the game and remain calm under extreme pressure earned him the well-deserved Player of the Match award.

The Kohli Comparison: Temperament and Fitness

The performance caught the eye of former Indian spinner Harbhajan Singh, who took to Star Sports to laud the veteran’s longevity and fitness. Interestingly, both Pandey and Kohli share a common history, having been part of the same 2008 U19 World Cup batch. According to Singh, the similarities go far beyond their shared beginnings.

“His involvement is exactly like Virat Kohli’s because he is from the same group. You can call it a batch or a gang, it is the same thing,” Singh noted. “He belongs to that same batch and is just as fit. It felt very good watching him play, and he played a very good innings. It is good to see him back playing games, and Manish Pandey has been around since we used to play, maybe even earlier than that.”

A Testament to Resilience

Harbhajan Singh was particularly impressed by Pandey’s mental fortitude. After sitting on the bench for a significant portion of the season, Pandey was called upon to fill the void left by the finger injury sustained by in-form batter Angkrish Raghuvanshi. Stepping into a high-pressure situation after a period of inactivity is no small feat, yet Pandey displayed the composure expected of a senior campaigner.

“He did not lose his belief in himself. He joined the team as a senior player and had to sit out, but he gave confidence to the entire group that there is still a long way to go,” Singh added. “So the responsibility came on this player because he is quite senior, and he has done the job very well. I am very happy about it.”

The Road Ahead for Kolkata

While the victory against Mumbai Indians has provided a much-needed morale boost, KKR’s journey to the playoffs remains arduous. Having lost their first five fixtures, the Knight Riders have been forced to play catch-up for the remainder of the season. Following the latest victory, they currently sit in the sixth position on the points table with 13 points.

To secure a spot in the next stage, KKR must win their final league match against the Delhi Capitals, scheduled for May 24 at Eden Gardens. However, even a win may not be enough to guarantee qualification. The team will need to rely on favorable results from other fixtures—specifically losses for Punjab Kings (PBKS) and Chennai Super Kings (CSK)—while also considering their Net Run Rate (NRR), which could prove to be the ultimate deciding factor.

For now, the focus remains on the final game. Whether or not they make the playoffs, Manish Pandey’s contribution has served as a reminder that experience remains an invaluable asset in the fast-paced, unpredictable world of the IPL.
