Commanding Control in Sylhet

The Sylhet Test reached a pivotal juncture on day two, as Bangladesh established a firm grip over Pakistan. By the close of play, the hosts had carved out a significant advantage, leading by 156 runs with seven wickets in hand. The day was defined by disciplined bowling in the morning session and a determined approach with the bat during the afternoon, setting the stage for what promises to be a thrilling finish.

First Innings Recap: Litton Das Shines

The foundations for this dominant display were laid earlier when Bangladesh concluded their first innings at 278. The headline act was undoubtedly Litton Das, who delivered a masterclass in resilience and stroke play. The wicketkeeper-batter anchored the innings with a magnificent 126 off 159 balls, effectively rescuing his side from a precarious position and ensuring they put a competitive total on the board.

Pakistan’s bowling attack, however, remained persistent throughout. Khurram Shahzad proved to be the standout performer with the ball, claiming four crucial wickets, while Mohammad Abbas provided excellent support by securing three scalps. Their efforts restricted the potential damage, but the momentum remained firmly with the home side.

Pakistan’s Struggle for Rhythm

In response to Bangladesh’s total, Pakistan found the going tough against a highly motivated bowling unit. Despite resuming the day at 21 without loss, they were unable to build sustained partnerships. The Bangladesh bowlers maintained relentless pressure, with Nahid Rana and Taijul Islam leading the charge, each finishing with three wickets. Taskin Ahmed and Mehidy Hasan Miraz complemented them well, taking two wickets apiece to dismantle the Pakistan lineup for 232.

Babar Azam emerged as the top scorer for the visitors with a gritty 68, while a quick-fire 38 from Sajid Khan offered some late resistance. However, the consistent pressure applied by the Bangladesh attack meant that Pakistan were always playing catch-up.

Second Innings Strategy

With a 46-run lead in the bag, Bangladesh approached their second innings with a clear mandate to extend their advantage. While they suffered an early setback with the dismissal of debutant Tanzid Hasan Tamim, the innings was soon stabilized by Mahmudul Hasan Joy. Playing with positive intent, Joy struck a fluent half-century, forming a vital 76-run partnership with Mominul Haque that took the wind out of the visitors’ sails.

Joy eventually departed for a well-made 52 from 64 balls. Captain Najmul Hossain Shanto joined Mominul, and the pair looked set to bat through to the close. However, Mominul fell for 30 off 60 balls, becoming the second wicket of the evening for Khurram Shahzad, who continued to be a thorn in the side of the Bangladesh batting order.

Looking Ahead

At stumps, Bangladesh finished on 110 for 3, with captain Najmul Hossain Shanto unbeaten on 13. With a substantial lead and several wickets in reserve, the hosts are now in an enviable position. The focus for the upcoming days will be to build a target that puts the match beyond Pakistan’s reach. On the other hand, the visitors will need a massive effort from their bowlers early on day three to prevent the target from growing into an insurmountable mountain. The Sylhet crowd is set for an intense battle as the Test match enters its most crucial phase.
