Legal Green Light for Bangladesh Cricket

In a significant development for the future of cricket in the nation, the Bangladesh High Court has provided clarity on the governance of the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB). On May 21, 2026, the court ruled to dismiss a petition that sought to challenge the legality of the current ad hoc committee led by former national captain Tamim Iqbal. With this legal hurdle removed, the administrative body is now free to proceed with the highly anticipated board elections.

The Formation of the Ad Hoc Committee

The journey toward this current administrative structure began on April 7, 2026, when the National Sports Council (NSC) appointed an 11-member ad-hoc committee to manage the affairs of the BCB. This decision followed the dissolution of the previous board, which had faced intense scrutiny and allegations of election irregularities involving Aminul Islam Bulbul. The mandate for Tamim Iqbal and his team was clear: restore stability and oversee a fair transition for the board.

The committee is a diverse group, combining the expertise of former cricketers, legal professionals, and experienced sports administrators. Notable figures such as Minhajul Abedin Nannu and Athar Ali Khan serve alongside former BCB directors, aiming to bring a balanced approach to the management of women’s cricket, facility upgrades, and grassroots game development.

Navigating the Legal Challenge

The road was not without friction. A petition was filed against the committee, questioning the legality of its formation and the scope of its powers as an interim body. The petitioners urged the court to invalidate the committee’s decisions and sought an interim order to freeze all its activities until a final verdict could be reached. The case named various high-profile respondents, including representatives from the Youth and Sports Ministry and the International Cricket Council (ICC).

However, the bench comprising Justice Fatema Najib and Justice AFM Saiful Karim found no merit in the arguments presented. By dropping the petition from the cause list, the High Court effectively validated the committee’s current position, allowing the transition process to continue without further legal interference.

Preparing for the June 7 Elections

With the legal shadow lifted, the focus now shifts entirely to the democratic process. The upcoming election on June 7, 2026, is set to define the long-term leadership of the BCB. The governance structure for the next four years will be decided through a process involving 184 registered councillors who will cast their votes for 23 board directors.

The election is categorized into three distinct sectors:

  • Regional and District Representation: Ten directors will be elected from cricket associations across the country.
  • Dhaka-based Clubs: Twelve directors will be elected to represent the interests of clubs based in the capital.
  • Special Category: One director will be selected from a pool representing former captains, ex-cricketers, security forces, and NSC nominees.

Once these 23 directors are confirmed, the total board of 25 members—inclusive of two government-appointed directors—will vote to elect the new BCB president.

Strict Electoral Timeline

The Election Commission, headed by senior advocate Ahsanul Karim, has established a rigid schedule to ensure transparency. With the final voter list published on May 19 and nomination papers distributed shortly thereafter, the process is moving rapidly. The commission has set a deadline for final candidate lists on May 25, following mandatory hearings. The use of postal and electronic ballots will conclude on June 6, with the final results expected to be officially announced on the evening of June 7.
