A Dominant Display in New Chandigarh

The one-off Test between India and Afghanistan in New Chandigarh has firmly tilted in favor of the hosts. Building upon a massive total of 564 for 8 declared, India’s bowlers dismantled the Afghan top order, ending the day with the visitors struggling at 113 for 5, trailing by 451 runs. While the batting lineup laid the foundation, it was the exceptional performance of a newcomer that stole the spotlight.

The Batting Masterclass

India entered the second day looking to press their advantage, starting from 368 for 3. The innings was anchored by brilliant centuries from Shubman Gill (126) and KL Rahul (100). The depth of the Indian batting order was further highlighted by significant contributions from B. Sai Sudharsan and Rishabh Pant, both of whom scored 81. Even the lower order proved resilient, with Washington Sundar grinding out a gritty unbeaten 52 to deflate the Afghanistan bowling attack.

For Afghanistan, Mohammad Saleem was the standout performer with the ball. Despite the challenging conditions, he bowled with immense heart and precision, finishing with impressive figures of 6 for 140. Azmatullah Omarzai also showed early promise, though Afghanistan’s reluctance to utilize the Decision Review System (DRS) proved costly on multiple occasions.

Manav Suthar’s Dream Debut

While the centuries set the stage, the most significant narrative of the day was the arrival of left-arm spinner Manav Suthar. In his maiden Test appearance, Suthar showcased maturity well beyond his years. Bowling nearly two hours after the tea break, he maintained a consistent, threatening length and extracted significant drift and turn from the surface.

Suthar’s ability to strike at crucial junctures defined his spell. He claimed his first scalp of the day before the tea break and continued his dominance in the final session, ultimately returning figures of 3 for 21. His dismissal of Rahmanullah Gurbaz with a delivery that turned sharply away was a particular highlight, marking a successful introduction to the highest level of cricket.

Afghanistan’s Struggle for Stability

Facing a monumental target, the Afghanistan opening pair of Sediqullah Atal and Abdul Malik faced immediate pressure from the Indian pace attack. Prasidh Krishna was particularly lethal, removing Atal with a delivery that seamed in to shatter the stumps. Though Rahmat Shah provided a glimmer of resistance with an unbeaten 43, the constant pressure applied by the spin-pace combination of Suthar, Krishna, and Kuldeep Yadav made run-scoring an arduous task.

The visitors faced a series of near-misses and technical errors. Hashmatullah Shahidi survived an initial lbw shout thanks to the DRS, but eventually succumbed to Prasidh Krishna’s pace. As the day drew to a close, Afghanistan’s approach shifted toward defensive survival, hoping to minimize further damage before the third day of play.

Looking Ahead

India’s declaration allowed them sufficient time to attack the Afghanistan lineup, and their tactical execution was near-perfect. With a lead of 451 runs and the pitch showing signs of assisting the spinners, India remains in complete control. The combination of established batting brilliance and the exciting emergence of Manav Suthar has placed India in a commanding position to dictate the remainder of this one-off Test match. For Afghanistan, the focus will now be on building substantial partnerships to avoid an innings defeat, though the task against a disciplined Indian bowling unit remains daunting.
