India Beat Bangladesh by 5 Wickets in Women’s T20 World Cup Clash
Bangladesh suffered a 5-wicket defeat to India in a high-voltage ICC Women’s T20 World Cup group-stage clash which made their road to the semi-finals much tougher. The Tigresses posted a competitive total of 136 runs after batting first, but India chased it down with 19 balls to spare.
Winning the toss at Old Trafford in Manchester, Bangladesh captain Nigar Sultana Joty chose to bat first. Openers Dilara Akter and Juairiya Ferdous began the innings, but Bangladesh lost their first wicket after just 8 runs. Dilara scored 4 off 8 balls before falling to Renuka Singh.
Partnership and Contributions
Juairiya then built a valuable partnership with Sobhana Mostary. Bangladesh reached 40 for 1 in the first six overs. After the powerplay, India’s bowlers slowed the scoring rate. Juairiya was dismissed for a well-made 33 from 31 balls when Bangladesh had 59 runs on the board. Sobhana also made a useful contribution with 22 runs from 26 deliveries before being dismissed.
Captain Nigar Sultana Joty then lifted the innings with an aggressive knock. Sharmin Akter Supta supported her well as the pair kept the scoreboard moving. Joty played a classy innings of 32 from just 27 balls before departing with Bangladesh on 106.
India’s Chase
India made a confident start to the chase through openers Smriti Mandhana and Shafali Verma. The pair added 31 runs before Marufa Akter removed Mandhana for 8 from 6 balls.
Shafali continued to dominate and brought up a brilliant half-century. At the other end, Yastika Bhatia also looked in excellent touch. Shafali was eventually stumped for 53 off 34 balls by Nahida Akter with India’s score on 76.
Richa Ghosh then joined Yastika, and the pair kept India firmly in control with some fluent stroke play. However, Bangladesh refused to give up. Ritu Moni dismissed Yastika for 23 from 18 balls before Rabeya Khan removed Richa Ghosh for 10 from 12 deliveries.
Conclusion and Standings
The victory moved India to second place in the standings with six points from three wins. Bangladesh remain fourth with four points from two victories, while South Africa also have four points and sit third on net run rate.
Bangladesh will play their final group-stage match against South Africa on June 28 at the iconic Lord’s Cricket Ground in London. The Tigresses now need a strong performance to keep their hopes of reaching the semi-finals alive.
