Spin Sensation Restricts Essex at Chelmsford
After being put in to bat first, Essex hoped to set a formidable target on their home turf. Continuing her recent renaissance, Heap played a vital, fluent innings to lead a mini-recovery alongside South African international Anneke Bosch. Bosch showcased her trademark power, hitting a series of boundaries to put the bowlers under pressure. However, just as the partnership began to look threatening, veteran medium-pacer Georgia Elwiss broke the stand, trapping Bosch leg-before-wicket with a cleverly disguised slower delivery.
Unfazed by the loss of her partner, Heap continued to take the attack to the bowlers. She displayed superb footwork and timing, cutting and cover-driving boundaries off Knott and stepping down the track to loft Higham over the boundary ropes. Heap looked poised to register a well-deserved milestone, moving within a single stroke of her maiden T20 half-century.
However, the breakthrough came when Higham tempted Heap into another big shot. Attempting to clear the ropes once more, Heap failed to get the desired connection and holed out to long-on for a well-played 46 off 31 deliveries. Her departure triggered another slide for Essex. Debutant Amelie Bishop and Ariana Dowse fell in quick succession as they tried to accelerate against a disciplined bowling attack.
The final over of the innings encapsulated Essex’s frustrations. The Blaze picked up two wickets in successive deliveries, including a sharp piece of fielding from Knott, who reacted quickly to run out Sophie Munro at the non-striker’s end. Essex finished their 20 overs on a modest 136 for 9, a total that looked well below par on a good Chelmsford surface.
The Blaze Chase: Kelly and Knott Put on a Clinic
Chasing 137 for victory, The Blaze openers, Tammy Beaumont and Marie Kelly, set out to lay a solid foundation. Any hopes of an Essex comeback were quickly extinguished, however, as Knott joined Kelly at the crease. Knott immediately seized the initiative, dismantling the bowling with an array of aggressive strokes. She punched Gray and Kate Coppack through the off-side for boundaries before launching MacGregor for consecutive fours. She then put the exclamation mark on her aggressive cameo by hoisting Bosch over the midwicket boundary for a towering six.
Kelly, having found her rhythm, matched her partner’s intensity. The captain was the first to reach her milestone, bringing up her half-century off 42 deliveries with a crisp drive off Bosch to the cover boundary. It marked Kelly’s first fifty of the tournament, a timely return to form for the skipper.
Not to be outdone, Knott reached her own half-century just eight balls later, bringing up the landmark off just 34 deliveries. She then put the finishing touches on a flawless batting display by punching Munro through the covers for a boundary to seal a resounding nine-wicket victory. The unbroken second-wicket partnership yielded 95 runs off just 64 balls, demonstrating the sheer dominance of The Blaze’s batting lineup.

This comprehensive victory marks the third consecutive win for The Blaze, a streak that has deservedly propelled them back to the top of the Vitality Blast standings. The performance highlighted the depth of their squad, with both established stars and experienced campaigners rising to the occasion.
For Essex, the defeat exposes areas that require urgent attention, particularly their vulnerability against quality spin and lapses in fielding. While Liberty Heap’s batting form remains a bright spot, the team will need a more cohesive collective effort if they are to challenge the top sides in the upcoming fixtures.
