Mohammad Kaif Criticizes BCCI Over Rishabh Pant’s Vice-Captaincy Omission

A Controversial Shift in Leadership

The recent announcement of India’s squads for the upcoming Test and ODI series against Afghanistan has sparked a heated debate within the cricketing community. While the inclusion of rising star Shubman Gill as the leader for both formats signals a clear shift toward the future, the decision to appoint KL Rahul as the vice-captain for Tests—thereby sidelining Rishabh Pant—has not gone unnoticed.

Rishabh Pant, who previously served as the vice-captain and successfully led India during the home series against South Africa, finds himself in a precarious position. Former Indian batter Mohammad Kaif has emerged as one of the most vocal critics of this leadership reshuffle, questioning the logic behind the selectors’ move.

Kaif Defends Pant’s Credentials

Speaking on JioStar, the 45-year-old Kaif expressed his clear disappointment regarding the management’s decision. He emphasized that the selectors appear to be judging Pant based on his performance in shorter formats, such as the IPL, rather than his stellar contributions in the longest format of the game. Kaif stated, “Pant hasn’t done anything wrong. Both ODI and Tests are totally different formats.”

The statistics certainly back Kaif’s argument. In 2025 alone, Pant proved his mettle as a formidable force in Test cricket. Playing seven matches, the 28-year-old amassed 629 runs at an impressive average of 48, featuring two centuries and four half-centuries. According to Kaif, overlooking these heroics due to his recent struggles as a captain in the IPL is a misguided approach. “There are talks that under his captaincy, the team is losing, and the player himself is not scoring runs. But Rishabh Pant is India’s biggest match-winner in the Test format as a batter,” Kaif added.

The Consistency Conundrum

The controversy does not end with Pant’s demotion. The selection committee, led by Ajit Agarkar, has also come under fire for their handling of veteran pacer Mohammed Shami. Despite showing consistent fitness and form, Shami has been excluded from the squad. Agarkar explained that medical reports suggested the veteran seamer was currently only ready for T20 cricket. However, this justification has invited further scrutiny regarding the selectors’ consistency.

Kaif highlighted a perceived double standard in the selection policy. “KL is 34; you don’t pick Shami because of his age, but appoint Rahul as the vice-captain. The selectors have to be consistent,” Kaif argued. He urged the board to prioritize current form over age-related bias. “I would urge them to go by form and not look at the age factor. If a player is scoring runs and picking wickets, he should be selected. Again, I would like to say Pant should have been retained as the vice-captain.”

Looking Ahead at the New-Look Squad

As India prepares for the series, the absence of key figures like the rested Jasprit Bumrah means the bowling attack will feature Mohammed Siraj and Prasidh Krishna. Additionally, Gurnoor Brar is poised to make his debut, marking a new chapter for the team’s pace battery. Meanwhile, in the ODI setup, the return of Ishan Kishan has added a layer of intrigue, though Pant’s exclusion from the one-day squad remains a talking point.

Ultimately, the selectors face the difficult task of balancing regeneration with experience. Whether this strategy pays off remains to be seen, but for now, the cricket fraternity is waiting to see how these changes translate onto the field. As Kaif aptly noted, when it comes to international cricket, performance must always remain the ultimate currency for selection.
