Double Blow for Chennai Super Kings in Ahmedabad

The Chennai Super Kings (CSK) saw their IPL 2026 campaign come to a disappointing end on Thursday, May 21, as they suffered a massive 89-run defeat at the hands of Gujarat Titans (GT) at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. The defeat officially knocked the five-time champions out of the playoff race, making them the third team to be eliminated from the tournament this season, following the Rishabh Pant-led Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) and Mumbai Indians (MI).

However, the pain of elimination was compounded shortly after the match when the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) handed down a severe penalty to CSK captain Ruturaj Gaikwad and his entire playing eleven. The team was found guilty of breaching the IPL Code of Conduct relating to minimum over-rate requirements, resulting in heavy financial penalties for everyone involved.

Gujarat Titans Dominate with the Bat

The match in Ahmedabad quickly transformed into a nightmare for the Chennai-based franchise. Winning the toss, CSK captain Ruturaj Gaikwad elected to bowl first, hoping to restrict the home side on a favorable pitch. However, the decision backfired as Gujarat Titans’ top order put on an absolute masterclass from the very first over.

GT openers Sai Sudharsan and captain Shubman Gill laid a formidable foundation, dismantling the CSK bowling attack with a massive 125-run partnership for the first wicket. Sai Sudharsan continued his stellar run in the tournament, anchoring the innings beautifully while scoring 84 runs off just 53 deliveries. At the other end, skipper Shubman Gill played a highly aggressive knock, smashing 64 runs off 37 balls at an impressive strike rate of 172.97.

Once the opening partnership was broken, there was no respite for the CSK bowlers. England’s star batter Jos Buttler stepped up to provide the perfect finishing touch. Buttler played an explosive, unbeaten cameo, scoring 57 runs off a mere 27 balls to propel the Gujarat Titans to a mammoth total of 229/4 in their allotted 20 overs.

CSK’s Chase Crumbles Early

Faced with a daunting target of 230 runs, Chennai Super Kings needed an explosive start but instead suffered the worst possible beginning. Wicketkeeper-batter Sanju Samson was dismissed for a golden duck on the very first ball of the run chase. Gujarat Titans’ paceman Mohammed Siraj produced a brilliant delivery that forced an edge, which was safely caught behind the stumps.

The CSK batting order struggled to build partnerships against a disciplined GT bowling unit. All-rounder Shivam Dube was the lone bright spot in an otherwise bleak batting performance. Dube played a highly entertaining and fighting knock, blasting 47 runs off just 17 deliveries. Unfortunately for Chennai, Dube received virtually no support from his fellow batsmen, and the team’s innings quickly fell apart.

The Gujarat Titans’ bowlers maintained relentless pressure throughout the second innings. Mohammed Siraj, Kagiso Rabada, and Rashid Khan starred with the ball, picking up crucial wickets at regular intervals to restrict Chennai Super Kings and seal a comfortable 89-run victory.

Ruturaj Gaikwad and CSK Squad Fined for Slow Over-Rate

To add insult to injury, the BCCI announced shortly after the game’s conclusion that Chennai Super Kings had been penalized for maintaining a slow over-rate during the match. Because this was CSK’s second over-rate offense of the IPL 2026 season under the league’s strict guidelines, the penalties were significantly harsher than a first-time warning.

According to the official statement released by the IPL, captain Ruturaj Gaikwad was fined INR 24 lakhs. The rest of the playing eleven, including the designated Impact Player used during the match, did not escape punishment either. They were each fined either INR 6 lakhs or 25 percent of their respective match fees, whichever amount was lower.

The official IPL release stated:

“Ruturaj Gaikwad, Captain, Chennai Super Kings, has been fined after his team maintained a slow over-rate during Match 66 of TATA Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 against Gujarat Titans at the Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad. As this was his team’s second offence (first offence in Match 18) of the season under Article 2.22 of the IPL’s Code of Conduct, which pertains to minimum over-rate offences, Gaikwad was fined INR 24 lakhs. The rest of the members of the Playing XI, including the Impact Player, will be fined either INR six lakhs or 25 per cent of their respective match fees, whichever is lesser.”

CSK’s first over-rate infraction of the season occurred earlier during their Match 18 clash against Delhi Capitals on April 11. Under the IPL rules, a third offense would carry even stiffer penalties, including a potential match ban for the captain, although CSK’s elimination means they will not have to worry about that scenario until the next edition.

The IPL 2026 Playoff Picture

With this defeat, Chennai Super Kings joined Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) and Mumbai Indians (MI) as the teams officially knocked out of contention for the IPL 2026 playoffs. The defeat leaves CSK to ponder what went wrong in a season defined by inconsistency and late-stage struggles, while Gujarat Titans keep their playoff ambitions firmly alive.
