A Dream Debut at New Chandigarh

The stage was set in New Chandigarh during the one-off Test between India and Afghanistan. As the tea break approached on the second day, Shubman Gill handed the ball to debutant Manav Suthar. With India having declared their first innings at 564 for 8, the pressure was on the young spinner to break the resistance of the Afghan openers. It was a high-stakes moment, the kind that historically belonged to veterans like R. Ashwin, yet Suthar stepped into the role with remarkable composure.

The Technical Mastery of a Spinner

Unlike many modern spinners who focus heavily on complex variations, Suthar relies on the classic virtues of accuracy and rhythm. Bowling from around the wicket, he maintains a side-on delivery stride, which allows him to track the batter’s movements and make split-second adjustments. Even with a relatively new ball, Suthar displayed the maturity of a seasoned professional, extracting immediate turn and maintaining a speed of around 90kph.

His impact was instantaneous. By inducing a top-edge from Abdul Malik in his very first over, he etched his name into history as one of the few Indian players to claim a wicket in their opening over of Test cricket. His control was absolute; in his first eight overs, he conceded runs off only three deliveries, constantly keeping the Afghan batting lineup under the pump.

The Numbers Behind the Performance

The statistical evidence of his dominance was staggering. During his initial spell, broadcasters noted he was extracting an average of 5.3 degrees of turn, significantly outperforming his counterparts. His performance was particularly vital given that this was India’s first home Test since 2010 to feature neither Ashwin nor Ravindra Jadeja. Suthar ensured there was absolutely no drop in the quality of the spin attack.

Teammate Washington Sundar was quick to praise the debutant’s energy, noting: He uses a lot of his body. Every time he gets into the load-up position, he puts all his energy into the ball. That’s an amazing skill and attitude to bring to every delivery.

More Than Just a Bowler

Suthar’s contributions were not limited to his bowling figures of 3 for 21. He proved his worth with the bat as well, contributing a vital 28 off 41 balls during a 54-run partnership with Washington. His aggressive intent, highlighted by stepping out to loft shots for boundaries, showcased a player with a well-rounded cricketing intellect.

His journey to the national side has been defined by hard work in the domestic circuit, including a maiden first-class century in the 2025-26 Ranji Trophy. At just 23 years of age, Suthar possesses the mental and physical attributes required to anchor the Indian bowling attack for years to come.

The Path Forward

Head coach Gautam Gambhir has been vocal about scouting for a fourth spinner ahead of the upcoming tour to Sri Lanka. With his stellar performance in New Chandigarh, Suthar has effectively staked his claim. Having fulfilled his lifelong dream of wearing the Test cap, the young spinner is already looking like a permanent fixture in the Indian dressing room. If this debut is any indication of his potential, Indian cricket is indeed in safe hands.
