Rising Through Adversity: The Resilience of Yastika Bhatia
In the high-stakes world of international cricket, the journey of an athlete is rarely a straight line. For Indian wicketkeeper-batter Yastika Bhatia, the path to greatness has been paved with physical challenges, periods of uncertainty, and the profound realization that resilience is the ultimate hallmark of a champion. After a grueling 18-month rehabilitation process following an ACL injury, Bhatia has emerged not just as a player, but as a testament to the idea that for Yastika Bhatia, every setback is ‘fuel to come back stronger’.
The Long Road Back to the Pitch
The road to recovery was anything but easy. Missing the prestigious home ODI World Cup in 2025 and the excitement of the Women’s Premier League (WPL) were significant blows for a player at the height of her career. However, Bhatia views these moments not as lost time, but as essential lessons in patience and mental fortitude. Returning to the international stage in May during the T20I series against England, she carried the wisdom gathered during her time at the Centre of Excellence (COE).
“Patience and resilience is what this journey taught me during the rehab,” Bhatia reflected during a recent interaction. “Even if you can’t see the result, the process is what you have to stick to. You have to believe in yourself that you will make the comeback.”
A Support System Built on Trust
No athlete succeeds in isolation, and Bhatia is quick to credit the people who stood by her during the darkest phases of her injury. From the dedicated physios and trainers at the COE to the unwavering belief of her family and coaching staff, she notes that having a support system was pivotal. This collective trust bolstered her self-belief, allowing her to transform the frustration of being sidelined into a focused preparation for her eventual return.
The support from the Indian team management, particularly captain Harmanpreet Kaur and coach Amol Muzumdar, was equally critical. Even when she faced fluctuations in form and team selection—such as missing out on the Asian Games squad—the clear communication from the leadership helped her stay grounded and ready for the next big opportunity.
Finding Philosophical Strength
During her recovery, Bhatia found solace and guidance in the teachings of the Bhagavad Gita. The text provided her with a philosophical framework to handle the pressure of professional sports. “I read the Gita where Karma is the main thing,” she explained. “We have to keep working. We don’t have to worry about the results but we have to keep working. We have to be detached from the results. So, I think process is main.”
This detachment allowed her to focus entirely on her daily training, rather than worrying about the timeline of her return or immediate statistical success. By embracing the process, she was able to navigate the uncertainty of international selection with a calm and composed demeanor.
The Lord’s Masterclass: A Culmination of Effort
The pinnacle of her recent comeback was undoubtedly her maiden Test century at the iconic Lord’s cricket ground. Faced with the pressure of the historic venue, Bhatia employed a tactical approach, breaking her innings into manageable milestones. She focused on session-by-session goals, refusing to let the magnitude of the century overwhelm her natural, aggressive style of play.
When the landmark was finally reached, the emotional release was palpable. For Bhatia, that century was not just her own; it was a tribute to every coach, teammate, and loved one who held faith in her during those long 18 months. As she noted, “This journey does not belong to one person. Everybody involved in backing me, believing in me, gets the credit for that.”
Looking Ahead: Staying Humble and Hungry
Now 25, Bhatia is not resting on the laurels of her success at Lord’s. She views this achievement as the start of a new, more experienced chapter in her career. Among the many well-wishers following the victory was the legendary Sachin Tendulkar, who offered her advice that resonates deeply with her current mindset: “Stay humble and stay hungry.”
With a clear mind and a fortified spirit, Yastika Bhatia is ready to face whatever the future of international cricket holds. She remains a shining example of how adversity, when met with the right perspective, can serve as the ultimate catalyst for growth. As she continues her journey on the field, the world of cricket waits to see how she will use her next set of challenges to push the boundaries of her performance once more.
